Duffield Ashmead IV, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon and hand surgeon at The Hand Center in the greater Hartford, Connecticut, area. Dr. Ashmead sees patients of all ages in need of hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow care in Hartford, Glastonbury, Tolland, and Bloomfield. He is particularly interested in congenital hand issues and problems affecting children.

Dr. Ashmead earned his undergraduate degree with honors at Princeton University in New Jersey before completing his doctorate at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He completed his preliminary general surgical training at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut, and a one-year hand surgery fellowship with the Connecticut Combined Hand Surgery Fellowship at the University of Connecticut in Farmington. Upon completing his fellowship, Dr. Ashmead finished a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, followed by an 18-month fellowship, including six months at the Hospital for Sick Children (now Great Ormond Street Hospital) in London, UK.

Dr. Ashmead has shared his knowledge through teaching appointments at the University of Massachusetts and at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He is the program director of the University of Connecticut Hand Surgery Fellowship and assistant clinical professor of surgery at the University of Connecticut.

Dr. Ashmead has published many scientific articles and book chapters, is involved in clinical research, and teaches residents and postgraduate fellows. Dr. Ashmead is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery with an added qualification for surgery of the hand.
