Chris McCarthy, M.D., is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity surgery at The Hand Center. He sees patients of all ages throughout the greater Hartford region. Dr. McCarthy's professional interests include complex traumatic upper extremity injuries, peripheral nerve surgery, repair, and reconstruction, and upper extremity arthroscopy.

Dr. McCarthy earned his undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University in Columbus before graduating from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He then completed an orthopaedic residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus. After completing his residency, Dr. McCarthy moved to Massachusetts for a subspecialty fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery, including microvascular repair and reconstruction, at Harvard University with the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. McCarthy practiced hand and microsurgery for two years in Columbus, Ohio, before relocating to Connecticut and joining The Hand Center.

In addition to his education and medical work, Dr. McCarthy has presented research on topics including microsurgery, hand safety in the workplace, and hand surgery advances and published research in industry publications and journals. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and maintains active memberships in the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, American Association for Hand Surgery, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
